Mr. McCarthy began working in the real estate industry in 1988 immediately upon graduating from high school. While attending university and working towards his professional designations, Mr. McCarthy worked as a janitor, landscaper, troubleshooter and Landlord's representative. Both his academic and hands-on training were extensive. W.P.J .McCarthy and Company Ltd. was incorporated in 1988 and operates as a full service independent real estate firm. Mr. McCarthy is a steadfast believer in ongoing professional development and accreditation. He believes learning never stops nor does the development of one's skill set. Today Mr. McCarthy is one of the most accredited real estate practitioners in the world, and has worked on projects throughout North America. William McCarthy has served as a Committee member, Board Director or Officer of several professional organizations, community activities, and other volunteer associations and religious organizations. To date he has served on approximately 100 committees or boards, often chairing the organization itself.

Mr. McCarthy will assume the presidency of the Real Estate Institute of Canada in June 2009. He has been a Board member and President of other real estate bodies over the past twenty years, including President of the Institute of Real Estate Management – B.C. Chapter.

Mr. McCarthy continues to be actively involved in those organization which support healthcare and education. He is the former Chairperson of the Burnaby Hospital Foundation and served as a the Chair of this hospital's most successful Capital Campaign.
