William Peter Joseph McCarthy is the founder, President, and owner of the company that bears to his name. Mr. McCarthy began working in the real estate industry in 1988 immediately upon graduating from high school. While attending university and working towards his professional designations, Mr. McCarthy worked as a janitor, landscaper, troubleshooter and Landlord‘s representative. Both his academic and hands-on training were extensive. W.P.J .McCarthy and Company Ltd. was incorporated in 1988 and operates as a full service independent real estate firm. Mr. McCarthy is a steadfast believer in ongoing professional development and accreditation. He believes learning never stops nor does the development of one‘s skill set. Today Mr. McCarthy is one of the most accredited real estate practitioners in the world, and has worked on projects throughout North America. In addition to his own professional activities, he is a well respected and accomplished author, educator and scholar.

William McCarthy has served as a Committee member, Board Director or
Officer of several professional organizations, community activities, and other
volunteer associations and religious organizations. To date he has served on
approximately 100 committees or boards, often chairing the organization itself.
Mr. McCarthy‘s professional community service includes:

Actively involved in several organizations committed to and supportive
of health care and cancer research and education. Mr. McCarthy is
the former Chairperson of the Burnaby Hospital Foundation and also
chaired this hospital‘s most successful Capital Campaign in its history.
Mr. McCarthy has served as an Director and Officer of the Real
Estate Institute of Canada, this country‘s premier organization
dedicated to real estate education and professional development.
In 2009-10 Mr. McCarthy served as the Institute‘s 55th President.
Mr. McCarthy served as a Director and Officer and President of the
Institute of Real Estate Management‘s British Columbia Chapter.
Mr. McCarthy currently serves as a Director of the Institute of Real
Estate Management‘s Foundation.
Mr. McCarthy currently serves on the Institute of Real Estate
Management‘s Ethics Committee.
Mr. McCarthy is the current Chairperson of the Counselors of Real
Estate Ethics Committee.
Mr. McCarthy actively serves on several professional Committees and
Boards focused on real estate education, scholarship, academics, and
professional standards and ethics.
Mr. McCarthy is a member of the Real Estate Institute of Canada‘s
real estate faculty. He regularly teaches real estate and business
ethics and the leasing process across the country. He is a frequent
participant in seminars and presentations on various real estate and
business matters. He actively pursues real estate scholarship and
academic research on related topics.
Mr. McCarthy is the author of three real estate textbooks for the
Real Estate Institute of Canada. REIC 2600 Ethics and Business
Practice; REIC 2630 The Leasing Process; REIC 2631 Negotiation and
Documentation in Commercial Leasing.
Mr. McCarthy is the two time recipient of the Morguard Literary Award
for the best real estate article written that year in Canada.
He has been the real estate columnist for the Burnaby Now newspaper
since 1994.
He is the two time recipient of the Institute of Real Estate
Management‘s British Columbia Property Manager of the Year Award
and the two time recipient of this Chapter‘s Member of the Year Award.
He is the recipient of the J. Harvey Award presented by the Real
Estate Institute of Canada to an individual who has significantly
contributed to real estate education in Canada. His has been
recognized for this many contributions to the Real Estate Institute of
Canada, Institute of Real Estate Management and Counselors of Real
Estate.
